In 1871, Dr. King of the Geological Survey of India discovered coal near the village of Khammam district, Yellandu and one of the major coal contains his name. The Hyderabad (Deccan) limited company incorporated in England acquired the mining rights in 1886 to exploit coal found in the area of Yellandu.
The company was incorporated on 23rd December, 1920 under the Hyderabad Companies Act as a corporation under the name "The Singareni Coal Mines Limited Partnership '(SCCL). was acquired all assets and liabilities of the Hyderabad (Deccan) Co. Ltd. Best & Co., acted as secretaries and sales agents. The State of Hyderabad purchased a majority stake in the company in 1945. From 1945 to 1949, the Hyderabad Construction Co., Ltd., was acting as administrative agent. In 1949 this function was entrusted to Industrial Trust Fund by the then Government of Hyderabad. Interest in the Company's control delegated to the Government of A.P in 1956 in accordance with the reorganization of States. In this way , the SCCL became a Government company under companies Act 1956.

Large-scale expansion of SCCL was conducted during the first five years of plans. In 1960, the Government. of India started its participation in the capital of the company and also began to extend support of the loan. So, since March 1960 has been jointly owned by the Government of A.P and the Government of India. In 1974, the Government of India moved its capital to the Authority Coal Mines Limited. The way to extend financial assistance for the expansion of SCCL by the Government. of A.P., and the Govt. of India during the V-Plan agreed at the Four Party Agreement executed on June 10, 1974. Subsequently, the Government. of India decided to control their assets directly in SCCL. Consequently, the agreement was concluded on December 13, 1977. The SCCL, the Government of AP, the Government of India and Coal India Limited were parties to the agreement. These two agreements are popularly called quadripartite agreements.
For financial assistance and other during the VI, VII, VIII, IX and X Plan periods, separate agreements were executed on March 31, 1985, February 10, 1989, September 24, 1994, January 11, 2002 , October 19, 2004 and June 11, 2010 between the Government of India, the Government of Andhra Pradesh and SCCL. These agreements are called tripartite arrangements.
